The purpose of the view had been given by the guest lecturer was to give an overview about the reference job in the library and how could it be achieved.
The next session, Jenny, our lecturer lead an activity and fire up ideas about what is reference jobs and how we could illustrate the reference librarian. Four groups in the class illustrated the reference librarian as a person who is user friendly, accessible 24/7, my group wrote www.reference.com, while the other drawed a person with earth in his mind. A reference librarian is the one who know about their resources well in order to give a correct info to their clients. This activity lead us to ideas what we should prepare and do to be a competent reference librarian.
Another activity given by Jenny was discussing job description of librarians from some unis and institutions. Many are high level position, people here call it Band 4 or level 5. It's very usefull to know and analyse the job description and requirements from particular insitutions, which are very very high standard. One institution requires the applicant must be meet the requirements for ALIA memberships, graduated from Doctorate librarianship, and so on. Hope people not discouraged reading this requirements even the work seems to be a lot and challenging.
The class ended by discussing the assigment 1, revelling a poster. Choose a resource book or websites listed in the Blackboard and design a poster to inform people about the resource we have choosen. Havent decided mine yet. library (If I not mistaken). The second ones is Jennifer who graduate from MIM last year and currently working in QUT as PASS mentor. Her main job is in the library answering enquiries from students through library chatroom.
